Buliding Blocks to Mechanical Engineering




Mechanical Engineering is one of the many disciplines of engineering that have shaped and advanced the society of today. Engineering performed by Mechanical Engineers is evident in many places and areas throughout the world. Some of those places include medical, agriculture, building-related, transportation vehicles, monuments, etc. These are all considered sectors of Mechanical Engineering.

The Mechanical Engineering field is so important to the world and society in which we live. If mechanical engineering was not around many products and designs would not be here today. Simply, Mechanical Engineers make things work and find solutions to problems that need to be fixed.

By the time a person has stepped out their door for the day, they have probably used and touched at least 15 items that a Mechanical Engineer mindset was behind. These vary from using a door/window, prepping oneself for the day, making breakfast, viewing a type of media, among countless other things. It is crazy to think many items a person comes into contact with may have been designed by a mechanical engineer.

If Mechanical Engineering was not around, the car you drove to work this morning could be no more than a box on four wheels. A Mechanical Engineer has worked on the design of that car to help it be efficient and have exceptional standards. Automobiles are what they are today do to the work of engineers, especially Mechanical Engineers.

A huge back-bone behind the Mechanical Engineering industry is all of the math and science concepts. A student pursuing this degree will take many courses in these fields. Classes will probably include statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, calculus 1-4, general chemistry, and more. Most students pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree most likely have a passion for math and science and how it is used with engineering, at least I know I do. Not only do I have a passion for math and science, I also have a passion to see Mechanical Engineering work to improve and help the world.

Where a Mechanical Engineer may work is unpredictable because the field has a presence in a variety of companies. Many different corporations that cross a wide range of zones in society will hire Mechanical Engineers to further their developments. Some of the many companies include, NASA, Google, Apple, The Boeing Company, United States Department of Energy, Ford Motor Company, and Walt Disney Company. There is definitely a large range of possibilities where one may work as a Mechanical Engineer.  

Collegiate and professional mechanical engineers may be involved with or know of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers organization. A couple of their values, which I think are also values of Mechanical Engineering as a whole, include: ASME does a great job listing these values on their website and include:

• Nurture and treasure the environment and our natural and man-made resources

• Facilitate the development, dissemination and application of engineering knowledge

• Promote the benefits of continuing education and of engineering education

• Respect and document engineering history while continually embracing change

• Promote the technical and societal contribution of engineers

I have informed you all about the field of Mechanical Engineering but this post just scratches the surface, there is so much too learn! I decided to pursue this field of study because I have a strong passion for math and science. I also feel I can use Mechanical Engineering to help others and society. I think it would be really interesting to work with Mechanical Engineering in the medical field or in agriculture. It is very exciting to me to learn about systems, products, processes that I encounter everyday.

  1. I found this very informative and interesting. Even though I am not majoring in any discipline of engineering, I could understand everything written in the blog. The pictures were appropriate to the context. I never thought about how much everyday things we take for granted were made by mechanical engineers, so I was glad that you included that in the blog post. I also thought it was interesting that Disney World hired mechanical engineers, how cool would that job be!

  2. Thank you. I am glad I could inform you somewhat about mechanical engineering. Yeah, it is crazy to think so many things are products of mechanical engineering. I know of someone who got to have an internship with Disney! I don't know what she did but I bet it was pretty sweet working with the roller coasters and stuff.

  3. Lots of links very good, finding info on a blog is nice but having other sources back it up makes it credible which many blogs lack. This was very informative I like how you not only have a passion for math and science but you have a passion in Mechanical Engineering and wish to see it aid the world in one way or another. Lots of pictures definitely help make the concepts sink in. The title is a nice touch too.
